To begin, I researched the three designs that I chose. These designs stood out to me because of the ways the interact with the environments that they’re in, whether it be a harsh contrast or a subtle one. I saw this as a collision in itself, the building colliding with its environment. In my research I wanted to get a better understanding of what the architects’ motives were behind their designs so that I could form thoughts about how the spaces were intended to interact with one another.

After researching my three projects, I started a basic model of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art. I wanted to focus on the collisions at first seen in the extrusions that break through the roof of the main structure. Once I finished with that, I went to the top view to see how these extrusions looked from above and saw that the forms made a collage of rectangles and circles.

I also began looking at the Oakland Museum in Rhino. I wanted to diagram the top view of the building as I think that is where the beauty of the building really stands out. The forms and spaces created by the colliding planes seen from above give the sense of freedom to roam and get lost in the spaces. The different areas to gather outdoors and the roofs of the indoor spaces come together in a collage of forms and colors when viewed from above.
