Since last class, I wanted to focus on the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in order to fine tune what I had already done. After our meeting, I was more comfortable with using the terms (collage, collision, and coincidence) in regard to the various projects. In my head I defined them as:

  • Collage – a layering or combination of various components where they are organized in a complimentary manner
  • Collision – an unexpected intersection of two or more components
  • Coincidence – a situation where components work well together in a seemingly unplanned manner

With these definitions in mind I began to look at the 21st Century Museum further than I had before.

  • Plan Diagram
To start, I took the plan of the building and color coded the different areas in order to better understand the layout. The dark blue signifies a closed room that is extruded through the roof. The purple signifies rooms that are not covered by the roof. The light blue signifies the closed rooms that do not come through the roof.
  • Model
After making the plan, I created a model of the building by extruding the different rooms in order to show the interesting moment of the extrusions coming through the roof.
  • Coincidence
Here I diagrammed what I saw as the coincidences in the plan. I drew construction lines to show how the different spaces align with one another and to map out the flow throughout the building. These seem to be coincidences as it seems like all of these rooms just line up with one another by chance and that is just how they all fit in the building.
  • Collision
I also diagrammed the collisions that I noted as being important. That is where the extruded rooms intersect with the roof. I have highlighted these areas in blue for the right side and the front side of the structure.
