Collision of Shotgun and Tenement Plans
When tasked with colliding the two different styles of housing, I wanted to focus on the collision of the lightweight, rickety nature of shotgun housing with the dense, heavy nature of tenement housing. First, I took my shotgun floor plan, removed some of the information to make it more dense, and changed the walls to make them framing pieces instead. I then incorporated the dense interior walls of my tenement plan in order to make the interior of this new design dense as well.
When programming the spaces, I focused on the size of each space and their exposure to the spaces around them. I made a scale that has five steps going from most public to most private, these steps could be thought of as living room, kitchen, master bedroom, bedroom, and bathroom. The less dense spaces are more public, while the more dense are more private.
When taking my sections and cuts, I wanted to focus on depicting the varying densities of the spaces as well as the floors and ceilings. I also wanted to show the floating nature of the design and the airiness of the exterior.
